Another Heart-warming gem by Dr. Nick Trout!
Author/veterinarian Dr. Nick Trout gets better with every book! I've read all three of his memoirs of his life as a veterinary surgeon, but they truly are much more than that. His books teach us about love, responsibility and that special bond between each human and their pet. Many reviewers have compared his books to the "All Creatures Great & Small" author, James Herriott, and in this, Trout's own memoir of his growing up in the English country side, not far from the real life country doctor himself; you find out that actually meeting him at a young age, played a huge part in cementing Nick's determination to turn his love of animals, and his desire to heal and better their lives, into his own life time career.
The stories of his own pets while growing up, the part they all played in his early family, as well as those he acquired for his own children and how they changed their lives is heartwarming beyond words! You'll want to read his books again and again, and then buy them as gifts, which I have done many times!

ever by my side
I enjoyed this book. The author knows animals as you can tell by reading the book . he seems to know what they are thinking as well as his human characters. I had a German Shepherd when I was a small child. but it liked my brother better. it is true that they are a one person dog. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves animals and is planning to become a veterinarian. or work with or just love animals.

Ever By My Side
A thoughtful memoir about a man, his pets, and the effect they had on each other's lives. Although Dr Trout is a vet, his experiences and his family's are very much like those of the rest of us -- dogs who pull on the leash, cats and dogs who misbehave and love us despite our shortcomings. I have not read his earlier works about his vet practice, but am now interested in finding those as well. Highly recommended for all animal lovers.

A Good Read
Ever By My Side is beautifully written with just the right amount of narration and humor 'sandwiched' between tales of heartbreak. It highlights the value and relationships animals play in our lives and how early experiences help influence our attitudes towards living creatures in general. It also describes family dynamics between pets and their owners.
This is also a great coming of age tribute to the influence this author's parents, especially his father, played in shaping his world towards animals and thus in choosing his future career as a
veterinarian.
At an early age he witnessed how Veterinarians are crucial in the lives of pets and their owners. He began to sense that
veterinary science goes beyond medicine, that the human/animal bond is profound and that Veterinarians play a key role in fostering this bond.
Ever By My Side would appeal to anyone, especially animal lovers for it is a 'good read'!

Wish I could rate it 10!
I absolutely love this book! There are so many similarities to my interaction with my dogs over the years that it feels like he's walked in my shoes. And the fact that Dr. Trout's first name is Nicholas (my seven year-old's name) makes it even more personal. Reading each "act" made me laugh out loud one minute and cry crocodile tears the next. Of all the pet memoirs I've read, this one really hits the mark. Although this copy was free, I already have the final product pre-ordered and I am looking forward to reading some of Dr. Trout's other books. After losing my beloved Asher to a similar fate, I wish I could put into words how Patch's story impacted me but I'm afraid I'd give too much away to those who haven't read the book. If you have had pets, this book will touch your heart. And if you have never had a pet, hopefully this book will make you want to share your love with one.
