This was a very hard and boring book to read.
It reminded me of talking to a person that likes to hear themselves talk for long periods of time, but at the end of the conversation, they haven't said anything.
The only good thing about this book were the VERY small parts pertaining to Julia Childs which could be read in about 20 minutes.

by Lyn Julie & Julia - such an unworthy Julia
Was looking forward to the movie and thought I would get pleasure from the book first.. Now I have little interest in seeing the movie except perhaps for the Julia part. Perhaps Meryl Streep can save it. Reading about Julie's exploits, misery, complaints and serious bad language issues has been no fun at all....her character flaws and self denigration along with everyone else's... long, boring, nasty descriptions etc. certainly work at making the reader despise her character. Very disappointing. Sure glad did not loan to my teenage granddaughter first!

by Susi An unsavory read...
Ugh! I am currently plodding (and I do mean P-L-O-D-D-I-N-G) my way through this book. LOVED the idea of the book and was earger to read it. However, now that I've started it, I don't know that I'll be able to finish it.
Where 10 words would suffice, Ms. Powell uses half a page. And her paranthetic "asides" are more often than not at least a full paragrah in length.
And we are certainly made aware of Ms. Powell's political leaning as she takes every opportunity she can find to make some denigrating remark about Republicans. Equally annoying is her fondness for the work F (which rhythms with puck). All in all, she comes across as a whiny, yelling, angry B (which rhythms with witch). What a grand disappointment. I pray the movie succeeds where Ms. Powell fell short.

Julie is in a career quandary. She is working as temp and feels under-challenged. Hence, why not spend a year cooking the entire Julia Child classic, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking". This turns out to be a delightful, culinary romp through her less than perfect kitchen. I loved this book. Wish I had thought of it first.
Fearless, gripping, at once darkly funny and tender, spanning three continents and numerous lives, Americanah is a richly told story set in today's globalized world.
The story of an American family, middle class in middle America, ordinary in every way but one. But that exception is the beating heart of this extraordinary novel.
First time novelist Vaddey Ratner captured my heart and senses in this novel based on her childhood in Cambodia. Her story transcends any news story...
