This is one of the best books I have read in recent times. It is gripping from the Prologue onwards. The author has an excellent insight into the life of the impoverished millions in India. However rather than gloating on the poverty of the people he brings out their maganimous and generous nature. The excesses of the Emergency are exposed all through the book, yet there was not one page where one could say the author was exaggerating. All that happened during the Emergency, the year of darkness in India's democratic history. The story with all its diverse threads come together in a respendant quilt much like the one put together by Dina Dalal. It is tragic and ends sadly but it makes you laugh all the way through. Some book. Hats off to Rohinton and eagerly awaiting the next one.

WOW! A Fine Balance is a superb novel. The thmee is so deep, and developed so well. The method of deveolping the theme through the four main protagonists lives was a great idea. This novel really had immense meaning to it. It is an eye opener, as well as a rgeat read. This book is in my favourites collection.

My favourite aunt recommended this book and I thank her for lending it to me. I am amazed at the way the author brings me into the lives of the characters and the ways of India. I could not put this book down . The main characters had gone through so many changes and hardship, endoured much saddness and yet all did not give up hope. This book "stayed" with me long after I finished it. A good read!

Excellent book! could not keep it down! Excellent capture of the intricacies of rural and urban india during the emergency years. Beautiful portrayal of tiny details in personal interactions that were clear on a second reading. On the flip side, a feeling of consistent and almost predictable death of characters through most part of the book did occur.
