I am a sucker for any book about animals -- especially books about rescuing and rehabilitating sick and injured wildlife. The author explores the spiritual connection between humans and animals through his own experiences at a wildlife rescue sanctuary. I enjoyed the book a great deal -- although it was a bit too sappy at times for my taste. Sometimes I missed the point of a story that the author was trying to make because the writing is not as polished as it could be. But the work that Jeff and his colleagues do is to be greatly admired, and animal lovers like me will find this book a cozy read. I finished it in two nights,

I admit I am biased about this book since I am a volunteer board member of a wildlife center having a similar mission as the wildlife center named in the book.
What an inspirational story! I found An Eagle Named Freedom to be a love story between a man and a bald eagle. It is clearly written and about 200 pages. I doubt if I will ever forget Jeff Guidry's metaphor, "...cold ball of fear in my belly..." when he was diagnosed as having stage 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. I was touched about many of the episodes in the book such as the first time Freedom, a mature eagle, embraced him with both wings when Guidry was undergoing the agonies of chemotherapy.

This is a beautiful little book about a man and an eagle who found themselves in each other's life and the fiercely devoted relationship that developed. Jeff Guidry was caregiver and lifesaver to Freedom, the rescued eagle. In turn, Freedom was Jeff Guidry's lifesaver during his struggle with cancer. It's also a story of the love, trust and the spiritual connection we, as humans have with animals. Thank you, Mr. Guidry, for sharing your story.

This educational,inspirational, personal account, illustrates how Jeff Guidry came to terms with his own illness while working with animals who desperately need care. Because we all struggle to survive on some level, An Eagle Named Freedom is an important read. Guidry clearly and concisely illustrates how he, others and animals struggle and yet triumph over hardships. I feel we all need to be reminded how to put ease into our lives and make our days count. This book does just that!

You can learn a lot about non-Hodgkins lymphoma by reading this book but not much about eagles. At least half the book is devoted to the author's course of treatment for this disease. Throughout the book animals are anthropomorphized. An example: "I found myself screaming at my deer brother. "Why why why!!! Goddamn it, I told you to be careful!!" Animals aren't referred to as animals but are called"the wild ones". Overall I found the book to be poorly written and self centered.

When I first received this book and read the preface I had tears in my eyes. A beautiful eagle saved by a wildlife enthusiast who then is diagnosed with non Hodgkin's lymphoma. I couldn't wait to open the book and in fact I finished in one evening. I was very interested in the Sarvey Wildlife Care Center where the author volunteered and especially the commitment made by these caring individuals to help so many displaced or injured creatures. Freedom the Eagle's successful recovery was a true testament of the success of these wildlife centers. The author's struggle with his disease and his bond with Freedom brought richness to the story. After reading the book I felt disappointed that it did not tug on my heart strings as I had initially expected. Good read however as there were many rescues with happy endings for both the author Jeff and our wildlife friends. If you are an animal lover this book is for you.
