I'm 17 years old and as a school project, I was asked to read this novel. Overall, it's a good book. There is no doubt that she did successful job in painting the characters' emotions. The plot is also interesting and original. However, I can't help but compare this novel to her other works and I noticed that the Bonesetter's Daughter is re-using a lot of old materials. Other than that, everything else is excellent. The way the story is narrated makes it all the more intriguing. The beginning is a tad slow though.

Yes, this is a good book. But, one thing in particular bothered me. By the time you get to the part of the book where the mother tells who Precious Auntie was and what happened to her in the end, it has been set up so much that you already know who she is and what's going to happen (in fact you'll know near the beginning of the book) - it's just the details of how it happened that are filled in by the mother's story. So I found it quite painful to read through this part of the book, it was such a bleak march toward predetermined tragedy. And the way it was told made the mother seem less like a realistic person than a character whose sole function was to be the instrument of misfortune and regret. The story of the family secret resembled some Chinese fables, and I thought it'd be more effective in a short fable than in a novel.

This is a great book. I especially like the part describing "The Four Manifestations of Beauty"; it is an inspirational piece of writing.

Z, the novel about the life of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald is at points charming and; like another reviewer, I kept thinking of the movie, "Midnight...
