And When She Was Good
I received "And When She Was Good" as an advanced readers' copy. I understand sometimes authors will make changes before publication, so this review is based on the ARC.
I liked the book. It was good, not great. It held my attention and would make a good summer reading choice for the beach. There isn't a whole lot of thinking that needs to go into reading the book which makes it a nice summer read.

Ripped from the Headlines
I found this book promising but slow paced. It jumped from one time in the story to another, which made it some what confusing. The story was a ripped from the headlines kind of story with a heroine who was not as smart as she thought.

Good Read
The book was really easy to read and I really enjoyed the story line. I liked how the story went between the current time and Heloise/Helen's past from chapter to chapter, it helped to explain what was going on and to develop the characters nicely. I also really enjoyed that the author didn't immediately start in with the murder mystery part of the book; most books of this genre have already started the suspenseful parts by the first or second chapter and by the end of the book you feel like the climax was over a few chapters back.

Lippman is good!
Lippman has a great way with characters. In this latest novel, she delves into the life of a suburban madam and the circumstances that led her to this life. Her characters have a richness that really make them jump off the page and come to life. And When She Was Good was a quick, satisfying read!

Another knockout book!
The most important thing for me when reading a book is being able to get attached to the characters. When I saw the subject of the book, I had my doubts. A suburban madam? But Laura Lippman never fails to draw you in to her characters and empathize with them. I found myself unable to put the book down, and that is what I love in a mystery. I might not have liked all the qualities that the heroine possessed, but I definitely could relate to her as a mom wanting to protect her son, as a daughter wanting more from her mom, and as someone searching to make a better life for herself. Don't pass this book up!

L.L. Delivers the Goods
What a great book! Laura Lippman is a wonderful story-teller and a real pro. She strikes a great balance between plot and character. Like any good mystery writer, she plants her clues well, so that we an be both satisfied and surprised.
This is a stand-alone tale with interesting and complex women at its heart. It was developed from some shorter works. I might quibble with how her "slip shows," in the way she fills in the back story. It is, nonetheless, a great read

and when she was good
Heloise is good at many things, the author constantly reminds us. As a quick summer or beach read you will be happy with this novel. Not much that requires thinking or problem solving. Nicely written and easy to read.

Not an easy read
This novel was not an easy read-not because of the subject matter - but because the story line just jumped around too much. And the main character's history - oh please, what a cliche. It was a struggle to finish this book.
