Captivating Chronicle
When I saw that Outlander consisted of 850 pages of small type, I doubted that the author could hold my interest for such an extended period. Boy, was I wrong. The pace was brisk and the content was absorbing. I hated to put it down.

The plot presents a number of moral and ethical dilemmas for the hero and especially the heroine. She manages to justify her actions and gains support from friends and clergy. To sum up the moral of this story I would say... Love (or Lust?) conquers all!

Superb read
When I received Outlander I was sure I'd never get into it since time travel is not my thing nor are lengthy historical novels. Was I ever wrong. There is not much to add that hasn't been said in the other reviews but ignore the naysayers among them and read this. Love, lust, violence, history, war, religion..it's all there and so well written, it's hard to put down.

Outlander
This book was disappointing. Being a huge historical fiction fan I did enjoy the details of the time period but it seemed to me the characters were spending most of their lives either being almost beaten to death or having sex ! I don't know if I'll give Gabaldon's next work a try.

Outlander
Although the story held my interest most of the time, I found there were parts where I bogged down with too much detail. Often I thought the story was ending but would realize there were still 200 or more pages to go. If I had any criticism, it would be that Claire and Jamie seemed to possess "super human" skills as they moved from one life threatening crisis to another. Since the story left many unanswered questions, I most likely will read the next book in the sequel.

An engaging & well-written romance
Outlander is an engaging and well-written historical romance filled with vivid battle and sex scenes. Despite it's strengths, however, it is too long, sags in spots, and could easily have been trimmed by several hundreds of pages. I did enjoy the book, but it took me forever to read (not my usual m.o.). I may read another book in the series, but I certainly won't run out to get the next book immediately

A romance fantasy
This is a romance novel with overtones of fantasy particular to the Scots.
Claire Randall is a WW II nurse. In the tome the war is over, she and her husband are having their second honeymoon in the town if Inverness, Scotland. One day during an idle walk Claire visits a standing group of stones at Craigh na Dun. This is where the fun starts. For reasons unknown to Claire she gets catapulted back in time to seventeenth century Scotland.
There she meets dozens of very interesting Scotsmen from various clans, including one from her husband's clan who is nearly identical in looks to her husband. During Clair's time travel she becomes a witch , has a couple of near death experiences and marries. During this time Claire retains all of her nursing knowledge therefore is able to perform some medical "miracles" for the Scotsmen warriors hurt in battle. This is a real Scottish feast, brogue and all.
The novel is good, yet I was hindered in the reading of it by the Scotish brogue which runs throughout the book and is unfamiliar to me.

a WOW book for me
I have just come back from the past - the seventeen hundreds to be more precise. Jamie and Claire have brought me hours of joy, horror, laughter, fear and love. The size of the book overwhelmed me at first, until I read the first couple of chapters by then I was so entranced by the characters and the setting that I forgot about the page count and all the household chores. I am looking forward to reading more of Diana Gabaldon's books in this series. This book is now easily one of my favorites of all times!

burning desire
It took me until around page 260 to really get interested in this book. The book starts slowly with a great deal of background information, but once the story got going I couldn't put this book down. The characters were so real and genuinely likable. I fell in love with the main characters. The story drags at times with all of the details, but it is a quick read. I can't wait to read the next book.
