Fire (02/25/03)

I'm 16, and have never read a proper novel. I've read silly book, romances, sci-fi, but never a plain old fiction novel, that is until I found The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. I must admit it was the light blue cover, and its small A5 sized cover that drew me to read it, but i must say i couldn't have picked a better novel. I was gripted from the moment i picked it up untill the last few lines of the story. The love the family had for Susie was heart breaking, as was the love Ray had, and was finally returned when Susie was able to tell him throught Ruth's body. I have found my own love through reading book. I hope to read more like The Lovely Bones.

Thank Yo Alice Sebold

A great idea for a book, but fell short. no real character development.

Fabulous. Although the beginning is shocking, and often disturbing, you have to relate to the horror that Susie experiences. The rest of the book is upbeat and from Susie's version from heaven, not terribly depressing as in the first chapter. She describes her life, family, and friends down to every detail. It is bothersome that things are left "unresolved", but isn't that reality? It kept me interested throughout the whole book, and hoping the killer would soon be caught.

I found the voice of Susie Salmon who is supposed to be 14 years old entirely too mature for someone that age. The book is somewhat morbid and depressing. Slow moving and difficult to finish.

The book is thought provoking and painful at times to read. The character development and the pain the family members feel after Susie's death is real. I did not want the book to end.

I found Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones to be a wonderfully written first novel. Sebold holds your attention throughout the book and doesn't loose touch with the main characters voice. Sebold's use of poetic wording and prose makes this a eloquently written piece, one that I highly recommend. If you enjoyed this book I would like to recommend that you read Lucky also by Alice Sebold. It is an autobiographical acount of her rape as a freshman at Syracuse University. I would rate it a 5 as well just because it is so well written. Sebold proves herself as an amazing talent with both books and I look forward to her next novel.
