This year's National Book Awards winners were announced last night.
Arguably the biggest surprise of the evening was Jaime Gordon's win in the Fiction category for Lord of Misrule, which beat Peter Carey's Parrot and Olivier in America,
Nicole Krauss's Great House,
Lionel Shriver's So Much for That and Karen Tei Yamashita's I Hotel.
Patti Smith's Just Kids won the nonfiction award; Terrance Hayes won the poetry category with Lighthead; and Kathryn Erskine's Mockingbird won the Young People's Literature category.
