The winners of the 2008 National Book Awards were announced tonight, November
19, at the National Book Foundation's 59th National Book Awards Ceremony and
Benefit Dinner in New York City.
Fiction: Peter Matthiessen, Shadow Country
Nonfiction: Annette Gordon-Reed, The Hemingses of Monticello: An
American Family
Poetry: Mark Doty, Fire to Fire: New and Collected Poems
Young People's Literature: Judy Blundell, What I Saw and How I Lied
The National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American
Letters was given to Maxine Hong Kingston. The Literarian Award for Outstanding
Service to the American Literary Community went to 86-year-old Barney Rosset,
former owner of Grove Press and publisher of the magazine Evergreen Review.
He was also the American publisher of Henry Miller's controversial novel Tropic of Cancer and successfully led the battle to publish the uncensored version of Lady Chatterley's Lover - affirmed by the Supreme Court's 1964 ruling.
