It's looking like the National Book Awards dinner this Wednesday evening in Manhattan will be a considerably more glamorous event than in recent years.
In addition to moving the event from a midtown Marriott to the Cipriani Wall Street and installing a red carpet to welcome celebrity guests, the judges have been explicitly instructed to nominate authors whose books have been widely read - in response to the complaint that judges in recent years have favored little-known authors, which has reduced the stature of the award.
