The Library of Congress will announce today that the next USA poet laureate is Natasha Trethewey. Ms. Trethewey, 46, born in Mississippi., is the first Southerner to hold the post since Robert Penn Warren, the original laureate, and the first African-American since Rita Dove in 1993. She won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for Native Guard and was formerly the Poet Laureate of Mississippi.
