Supposedly the first reference to this expression is recorded in Chaucer's, The Parson's Tale - although I have to say that I did a quick search of the text (both in Middle English and modern English) and couldn't find any references to chickens or roosts in either version. If somebody can point me to the particular reference please let me know!
