What did you think of the way Lila reacted to Crete?

Lila knew the truth about Crete, and made choices based on what she knew. What do you think of her actions? Could she have done anything along the way that would have kept her alive, or was her death inevitable? Was her ultimate decision brave or reckless?

She should have turned him in. She didn't want to hurt Carl by letting him know what happened, but that just shows that she felt "blood" was more important than the lives of young girls. I'm not so sure it was all that realistic or intelligent for her to protect Crete, to feel like she had no choice. The state police are just a call away.

I think her death was inevitable for the plot. If she had reacted differently, we would have had a different book

I cannot imagine a young woman in Lila's situation just calling the police. Although a strong-willed person, she lived in a time and place where men like Crete ruled by fear and intimidation. She did what she thought was the the only thing possible to save her daughter and rid herself of the devil. Was she totally naive? Perhaps, but her instinct to protect her family was paramount.
