One of deep respect and love, but also one of wide distances.

I agree with eileenp - deep respect and love; however, I believe it is a case of him recognizing her need to "fly free".

The book was pretty much about herself and her relationship with her mother and her own thoughts about herself. I didn't think it was a couples book at all. It's hard to say if she thinks about her husband much, or maybe it just seemed to me that she takes herself so seriously there's not a lot of room for him in the book. They seem to get along OK.

The kind I would enjoy. Given a "wide berth" denotes trust but each seemed to enjoy sharing when they were together. She had a marriage her mother apparently didn't have.

I thought it seemed like a pretty good marriage. They each had their own lives, but it seemed to work for them.

I think this was a marriage of equals that in so many ways is not the case for most marriages. I think they were more like lovers than man and wife in many respects. It seems from what little we are actually told that it was a good marriage.

Like "beac," I also didn't think the marriage was much a focus of the book. When she did mention him, it seemed kind of distant, almost like a past tense. I think they were equals, almost like colleagues with a lot of respect and familiarity between them.

I thought it was beautiful. They had deep love, but respected the space that we all need.

From the little said about the marriage, it seemed to be more of a 'roommate' relationship. She married very young and went on to fullfill her own needs. Her choice to not have children is certainly un-Mormon like. Have no idea how they relate to one another.
