When I first saw Twain's wife, I thought the mermaid was certainly a product of his imagination as a way to deal with his wife's infirmity. His wife in the wheelchair wrapped in a blanket from the waist down was like the mermaid whose lower body was also "wrapped" -- and unavailable for sexual contact.
