Were they friends or romantically involved? What did they have in common?

I think Vivien and Jimmy saw a goodness in each other and that is what drew them to each other. They had each suffered a loss, Vivien, her family, Jimmy, his mother. That left holes in their lives. They both found ways to help others in need and to me, appeared selfless most of the time. I think eventually they would have gotten to a romantic involvement but circumstances intervened before it could happen. Both were honorable people and I don't think they would have done anything before they were unattached to Dolly or Henry.

I think Vivien and Jimmy may have become romantically involved if there had been more time for things to develop. I think they were both caring and saw that in each other as they worked with the children and Jimmy's father.

Even if the romantic feelings were there, I think both Jimmy and Viven would have redressed them as friendship, since both of the them respected their commitments to their respective mates. Since they are both described so alluringly, it's easy to imagine an attraction. On the other hand, they shared some of the most private aspects of their lives with each other. Certainly a very close bond, and, as others noted, possibly a great romance if time had allowed.

I agree with most of the posts that Vivian and Jimmy were drawn to each other, and under different circumstances would have become romantically involved. However, they both seemed honorable and not interested in starting a relationship before ending their respective relationships with Henry and Dolly.
