RE: What surprised you about the marriage of Jennifer and James?
Jennifer comes across as an independent, strong-willed professional--a person who would not have suffered fools gladly. Yet her marriage to James seems out of character. James comes across as secretive, prone to weakness. I found it surprising Jennifer put up with him and his frailties without even confronting him over them. Of course this makes her only more human and complex herself so in the end, I supposed, it worked out.

I was most surprised that there appeared to be some sort of collusion between them to hide some money mismanagement. It did not ring true for someone with Jennifer's independence and ability to support herself if she had left him. Jennifer did not appear to worry about social status or a social reputation, so what would have her motive or incentive to cover up James' apparent embezzlement?
