How does Bud integrate himself into the town of Pomeroy? Do you think he is respected? At what points is he made to feel like an outsider? What kinds of things can outsiders do to integrate into new surroundings?

Bud does all - repeat ALL - of the "little"things that make one part of a community. He attends all the HS games, the local stores, he volunteers, he visits the library and churches, he becomes known to all. He makes himself part of the landscape of the town so that if he doesn't show up, his absence will be noted.

Definitely participating in the traditions of the town will endear him to the locals. Also, he has the perfect job for "plugging in" to a new community.

As Becky said, Bud does all the things that make one a part of a community. Most of all, he talks to the people wherever he goes in town. He is a communicator by trade, and a communicator by nature. He seems genuinely interested in Pomeroy and making himself an integral part of the town. as someone who was once an outsider myself, I recognize in Bud's integrative efforts a subtle prescription for becoming a part of one's new community.

By immersing himself in all the activities and interests of the town, Bud doesn't stay a newcomer for long. He doesn't wait for people to come to him and get to know him, but instead he attends every club meeting, town function and special event in town. He willingly volunteers and shows a genuine interest in the towns people and becomes friends with the summer people and the permanent residents.
It isn't easy to reach out like that, but being the a reporter andthe owner of the town's newspaper makes it easier for him to break the ice with people. Plus, he has a very outgoing personality.
