Will the fields of science and belief always be at odds with each other, or is there a way for faith and science to coexist peacefully, in the same Toledo, in the same mind?

If Einstein can come to terms with the idea of a divine power (if only to acknowledge that nature is a mystery), then all of us can. Friedrich Dürrenmatt once said, "Einstein used to speak so often of God that I tend to believe that he has been a disguised theologian."
I think Irene and George are (or, more accurately, the author is) wise enough to know the two are actually not "at odds".

I don't believe that science and belief are always "at odds" with each other. I know several doctors and a few scientists who are devout in their religious beliefs.

The wisest comment I ever heard was from a librarian in my elementary school. A fellow student asked her if she believed in God or Evolution. She replied, "I believe humans evolved - with a whole lot of help." I was in sixth grade & I still remember that comment. And, as others have pointed out, there are plenty of scientists who have a belief system. So my opinion is that science and belief don't have to be at odds with each other if everyone is keeping an open mind.

It is my firm belief that faith and science can coexist peacefully. I spent most of my working life around scientists, and many of them are devout believers/active participants in their religions (which run the gamut). I myself am a person of faith who nonetheless believes in evolution and countless other scientific theories and doctrines. At the same time, there are phenomena that cannot be explained by science alone, and that's when faith often manifests itself.

Of course, a scientist can have faith. It's how science gets applied to faith and how faith trys to influence science. They each have they place when used appropriately.

To believe in science should not prevent one from also believing in things that we can't see but want them to be there. There are many things that happen that science can not explain or even needs to. If a person wants the comfort of faith in distressing situations then that is the thing that just might help them the most.

Be open minded. Respectful of both be sensible and pragmatic. I believe they will always be at odds, people never seem to agree.

As an atheist, I find the two streams to be constantly at odds. The problem stems more from Religion interfering with the scientific method. Religion has its place in philosophy and should be studied as a metaphysical need of man to find comfort...I don't understand the need for religion's current fight to justify the existence of a G-D!

If by "belief" you mean a sense of the awe and mystery of life, then by all means science and belief can and do co-exist. And what is science, but an attempt to explain these mysteries in human terms? I think we are looking at two sides of the same coin.

As someone who works at a Christian university, this is a passionate topic for me. YES, though many scientists frown upon religion, I know some brilliant scientists and scholars who are believers because of science.

Science and faith are not "at odds with each other." People are.
