What's in a name?

A book club doesn't have to have a name - but choosing a name is fun and brings with it a feeling of belonging. Below are some of the names of the groups BookBrowse has interviewed over the past couple of years. You can read their Q&As at http://bookbrowse.com/featured-bookclubs/archives/

Book It

The Tortoises & the Hares (fast and slow readers in one group)

The Living Poets Society Poetry Bookclub

Great Expectations Book Club

The Chick Lit Book Club

The Scandalous Book Club (who read only salacious books!)

The Nights at the Round Table

Wine Not Read

Novel Ideas book club

The Secret Bookers

Bookaholics

What's your book club called and why did you choose the name?

We are the Mountain Mamas. We are a combination of town and ranch women who live at the base of the Big Horn Mountains. We all love the mountains and try to get there as often as possible during the summer. Some of us go up to the mountains to play and some to move cows. Most of us ride horses as well.

Our book club is called Panera Unsanctioned. Panera because that is whre we meet and unsanctioned because the director of the library we work at told us we could not use the library e-mail because our group was not sanctioned by the library. We get the books through the library though so our name is a little dig.

"Paradise Readers" because we're all in southern Florida, some permanently, some snowbirds so that's the perfect name.

I wasn't very creative when coming up with a name for our book club...
It is called "Girl's Night Out Book Club" because really, that is what it is.
We meet at a local coffee shop/wine bar to drink, eat and discuss.
We do talk about whatever book we've read, but we also talk about our relationships, our children, and life in general. It is so much fun!

Our club is call Between the Covers. We all had suggestions but this is the one that stuck. We meet monthly at member's houses and the hostess fixes dinner, usually themed to go with the book. We've beeen together over 10 years now.

My Book Club is called the No 1 Ladies Book Club mainly because that is one of the 1st books we read, ie The No 1 ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith & we all love the series. We also meet at a book shop/coffee shop have a coffee & a drink & talk about all sorts of things as well as our books. Last weekend 11 of us caught a train & stayed at a hotel 2 hours away for 24hrs & had a wonderful weekend walking, eating & deciding what books to read for the next 12 months.

Can I ask how everyone decides what books they are going to read for their bookclubs?

We had a contest to name our club. The winner, now 94 years old, received a book club journal. We are the FRESH Ladies Book Club. Our members are from FRanconia, Easton, and Sugar Hill. FR E SH

Book Babes - We have a wide range of ages in our 16 year old group. Back when we formed and deciding on a name, Book Babes was brought up as a joke, but our oldest member who was in her late 70's at the time said, "I vote for Book Babes because i want to be called a babe one last time!". Sadly, she passed away a few years ago, but we will always be "babes" because of her!

We meet in our local library so we just called ourselves the name of our library "book club". Not original but people know who we are in our area at least.

We haven’t decided for sure yet, but I think my best idea so far is “The Plath to Enlightenment” :)

That's a terrific name. Does your club read poetry as well as novels?
