Families take many forms in The Lovebird. How is the book's depiction of families relevant to contemporary American culture?

Simon and his child are pretty close to a typical middle-class intellectual family except for the veganism and the activism. Granma's matriarchal family is a lovely and almost lost way of life. The Indian culture has been decimated in many ways and Granma has gone back to her roots. This is not a common thing. Having lived in Alaska for 44 years, I have seen the impact of the mainstream culture on Indians and Eskimos. It is not a pretty sight.

Today's American families are not necessarily the traditional mom and dad with two children they conceived on their own. Single parents, grandparents raising their grandchildren and all kinds of situations are the new norm.
