How would you describe Margie to someone who has not read the book? Did you identify with her?

I would describe Margie as a waif-like creature who is unsure of her center. She very easily gets drawn into a world that is not her own. I did not identify with her very much except for her idealism.

Margie is a young woman with a very soft heart for animals who joins up with an animal rights group that commits small acts of vandalism to free animals. She gets in over her head and becomes too reckless. Thus, she finds it necessary to go into hiding to avoid criminal charges. As she learns to live in her new environment, she is able to understand herself better and comes to terms with who she really wants to be.

I identified with her desire to be a part of a group that helps, but not so much with her over-the-top activity. I felt for her need to escape and re-invent herself.

I'd describe her as a motherless young woman looking for someone to mother, as well as someone to mother and take care of her. She's soft-hearted and kind, a bit too easily led but she eventually matures and finds herself.

I would agree with the descriptions of Margie already posted here. A young woman with a big heart for the underdog, be it animal or human. One who was easily led by an older, more experienced man who, in my opinion, took advantage of her. But, a young woman capable of growth toward maturity without losing the tenderness within her heart.

In many ways, Margie's journey is symbolic of the steps we all travel to become the adults we were meant to be. In her youth, she seeks answers and knowledge and makes mistakes. As Margie matures, she seeks love,companionship, friendships, and a purpose; consequently, she finds successes and failures.
But, she strives to be a better person, learn from her earlier mistakes and from bad relationships, and Margie tries to reach that place in the universe, as we all do, where she fits and is productive, and experiences happiness...we may not mirror Margie's exact actions/reactions, but her journey's purpose is one and the same.
