This Burns My Heart

I enjoyed this book --- sad and frustrating how many women have "sold themselves out" in their relationships and marriages? I find this frustrating today?

Does "sold themselves out" mean "settled for a marriage they didn't want"? Or does it mean that they married someone who then turned into (or grew into) someone else? I think it's two very different things. The latter happens to people all the time, but I like to think the former isn't all that common. Maybe I'm naive...

Some say we live in a period of "entitlement," and don't believe in really working for things. If happiness doesn't come immediately we just give up - thus the 50% divorce rate. In a more slow-moving and traditional society, would they have taken the divorce option if the stigma of divorce wasn't so great? Or would they have been more patient than we apparently are today because of their sense of tradition?
