I agree with Santa Fe Cowgirl. How could he have left them to save himself? As much as he truly loved Christine, he needed to be there for his family. Their need was more crucial. Christine was relatively safe, since she wasn't Jewish. At least she had a chance, whereas his family didn't.

Yes I think that he thought that his family had a better chance of surviving if he was with them.
