How do Laura's, Dan's, and Richard's relationships with their parents affect their lives? Their marriages? Does it change how they parent their own children?

I think the relationship one has with their parents is the single most important and influential relationship we will ever have...It influences future choices, perceptions, values and most importantly our ultimate choices in other realtionships, including marriage or any type of partnership...

Relationships with parents can serve as good example for our future behavior. They can also be good examples of what not to do. We see a bit of both in this book.

Relationships with parents are powerful whether they are good, bad or in between. Often we say we will not be like our own parents but become more like them each day.

Agreed, barbluvstennis. Your personality, sense of self worth, ability to prioritize and/or organize and much of your moral and ethical values come from your upbringing. That isn't to say you can't change any of these things; I think it's just more difficult once you have a certain set pattern. If I'd known what I know now, having three teenagers, I'd have done so many things differently!

I was thinking that one main theme of the author was the affect parents have on their children. In this case, it was a particular generation of parents. Since I am near the same age of the characters, I saw my own mom in these characters. But I thought these particular people were lacking something because they couldn't rise above the influence of their parents. I also thought this novel had a lot to do with looking back and having regret for choices.
