This book has many themes that occur in any number of books. Why did this author convince you that his story was different from the others?

For me, the characters were much more real and much more believable than in a lot of other books that cover the same ground. Also adding so much humor and so much humanity made it so much more enjoyable

This story worked because these themes are what life truly encompasses, and how these women handle their
real life situations is what makes this novel so endearing. These women could be your friends, your neighbors, your sisters, aunts, or mamas.

The issues of death, infidelity, sickness , alcoholism are the gut wrenching problems that rip people apart. What can save a soul during these times is friendship, having a soft place to fall. These women provide this for each other. They are always there for each other, no matter what!

I agree with all of you. These types of things occur everyday in our families. I don't know of any family that has escaped at least one of these themes. The fact that these three women stuck together throughout and in spite of all their dysfunctions is a real tribute to friendship.

The themes in this book are common to us all on some level.

Because it is an interesting and realistic story. The recurring themes were blended beautifully, intersecting rather than interfering with each other.

The story worked with all of it's recurring themes because the thread that was evident throughout the novel was love. Love tied every event and character together. This novel was all about life.

The recurring themes work because they are realistic; these are a part of every day life. Infidelity or alcoholism may not be a part of every reader's immediate family, but as years past and circles of friends widen or one is introduced to a wider variety of people through career changes, it's difficult to not know of or be affected by these realities.

Readers can identify and empathize with the Supremes since LIFE and all its facets would be the all-encompassing theme with death, infidelity, friendships, sickness, and alcoholism woven into the overall. As I read, I was thrilled to see the correlation to my theory of how a woman survives life's journey and how a woman copes with the curveballs that are plunked down. My theory is that surivival is possible only with the elements of family, faith, friends and a strong sense of humor. I can't fathom how one is able to meet daily challenges without those three Fs and the ability to laugh, often at oneself. Don't you agree that the Supremes epitomize these coping mechanisms?

I just thought these three ladies were so human. I wasn't even thinking about themes. I just saw them as real people trying to get by, excepting one another's weaknesses, and loving each other.

Almost everyone has experienced or knows someone who has experienced one or more of these issues. What works in this story is that all of these issues are mediated to some extent by the friendship along the women (and, to some degree, their spouses). The empathy, kindness, and humor in the way the three main characters relate to one another describe a coping strategy that could be valuable to any reader.

All of these things are a part of the lives of most people; if not all of them, at least some. They give the characters a "realness" that not including those aspects of their lives could not do. They also give the readers clues as to how those parts of our lives might be worked at. This book is about real people with real lives and the ups and downs of same.

The three women and their husbands seemed genuinely good at heart, even RIchmond who became a good man as predicted. You could root for their happiness and forgive them their faults and watch as they handled the big milestones in life. A lifetime of friendship bound them together.
