If you were Katherine would you have risked reading banned books about science/astronomy? Would you have been too excited to care or too worried about Henry's temper?

I'd like to think that I would have read banned books, and I think Katherine felt she was safe--at least in the beginning because Henry loved her. In the end staying alive was the most important duty.

It would be hard for an intellectually curious person not to read about new ideas, but Henry was a very violent and unstable man. He had no problem torturing and killing those who disobeyed his whims--or even seemed to disobey them. If I was going to take that risk, I would have been far more careful than they seemed to be.

Absolutely not. Not if I wanted to remain alive.

I don't know. I thought at times she was reading them because she thought her relationship with Henry would protect her. When the relationship changed she hid the books and hoped that the wrong people would not find out.

Thinking and speaking one's mind was definitely discouraged. Heads could be lost for that.

I would have. I have read banned books since I was 12 yrs. old..... not under the penalty of death of course. I think it's just that I don't like to be forbidden to read something.

Science makes the world go round. It is definitely worth the risk for me. Would rather die seeking enlightment than living for the rest of my life in the dark.

As a young person I read books that had been forbidden by my parents. I think the fact that they were forbidden made me curious as to why they were forbidden; however, I wasn't risking execution, so I think I would have been tempted to read the banned books at first, but once realizing the danger involved I think I would have done as Katherine did and gotten rid of the books.

If I had been Katherine, and as bright as she seemed, I definitely would have read banned books. The intellectual stimulation would have been worth the initial danger. Once she was no longer on Henry's 'favorites' list, disposing of the books was a wise move.

Yes, I would continue to read books, banned or not and accepted the consequences. There was so much turmoil during that period anyway that almost anything could be detrimental to your safety. At least engaging her mind was something she could do quietly.

I am sure I would have done it in a clandestine manner. It wouldn't have been possible not to if I was the same intellectually curious person that I am today.
