RE: In what ways were Lily and Katy different? Why did Lily feel Katy's life was "easy"?

I felt like I was very similar to Lily in a lot of ways, which is kind of unsettling. I come from a comfortable, middle class background. I have a tendency to take my "deep thoughts" too seriously. I find myself superior to other people in some ways, but wouldn't admit it. I think Lily knows underneath everything that she is strongly normal and boring and headed for a normal boring life and so she blows up small things in her life into drama. She thinks that Katy, who is just a little bit prettier, a little bit wealthier, a little bit smarter, has it easy because she doesn't have the urge to strive towards a fabulous and different life. She is happy with normal.

They might have been from similar backgrounds, but from Lily's point of view, Katy was one of the "in" people. Someone who is just a little prettier, a little smarter, a little more perfect than anyone else. Lily was spontaneous, sometimes to the point of poor choices, while Katy seemed never to stop out of line. I got the impression that Katy wasn't as pure as she wanted everyone to think. I feel like she stepped out of line on the sly a LOT, but just didn't talk about her exploits. I think each of us, looking at another person's life, can feel like they have it easy. With age, I have learned that everyone has their day in the hole .... if your life is perfect today, just enjoy, don't gloat that you are someone chosen for good things. Life can turn in a minute and you should be empathetic to others as one day you may need their support.

Katy seemed like a sorority queen and Lily was more of a hippy chick who liked to feel unique. Katy wanted to fit in more than Katy did and succeeded in doing so. Katy was classically beautiful and had come from a wealthy background, more privileged than Lily.

Lily did not have good self-esteem. When I read how her sister Anna viewed her, it was not the same as how Lily viewed herself. That being said, Lily was self-centered and as such she always compared herself with others. Katy seemed more comfortable with herself.

Self-centered people and narcissists are often fooling others. They appear arrogant and filled with self-esteem but they are like hollow eggs - you can crush them very easily and they are fragile.

I feel Lily wanted to be more like Katy, more studious, more goal-oriented, etc. Instead of emulating her, her feelings came out as jealousy and dislike. Katy seemed like a sweet girl, not someone who acted superior toward Lily but rather someone who went about her own business, occasionally asking Lily why she did things like answer the house phone. Lily made Katy into this "other" person in her mind, in order to build up a grudge and justify hurting her. Did this include killing Katy? I don't know if that's the case but I suspect it didn't include protecting Katy, either.

Lily certainly wanted to be different from Katy but what may have pushed them away from each other were their similarities--at least Lily really didn't like seeing herself as boring and ordinary as Katie. She pushed herself out the door not to have to see her roommate as a reflection of herself.

Katy was prettier than Lily, from a more functional family, more studious and generally seemed to have her life more together. Katy didn't share much of her life with Lily, so it appeared easy to Lily. Katy's parents weren't grieving the loss of a child or divorced, so Katy's family life probably really was easier.
