Actually I found the roles and impact of stories, written and oral, on the character's lives to be one of the most effective parts of this book, and I think that holds true for whatever color the character happened to be. This author did have a deft hand incorporating that impact into the story line.

RE: What roles did stories – both written and oral – have in the characters’ lives?

Stories are important in virtually everyone's life. I think that is one of the things that hits hardest after the death of a grandparent or the last live parent: the stories have ended, and some stories are gone forever. Who is this person in an old black and white photo from over a hundred years ago? There may not be anyone left to ask. The story is lost. For the slaves who were forbidden to learn to read and write, the oral traditions were vital in passing down some knowledge of their African ancestry as well as the "rules" for survival whether on the plantation or with the Underground Railroad.

I enjoyed the incorporations of stories. Both my parents have just recently passed and I am already aware of the importance of oral tradition. I cherish the stories passed down to me and hope there will be someone for me to pass them down to. This book has only reinforced those feelings.

I was so amazed how the slaves had stories from many years ago and they kept telling these stories for every generation as not to lose them !!! I'm not so sure if the stories of ones life are told to their families today so unfortunate !! But I do believe we all love storytelling !!!
