RE: What kinds of feelings does Boaty Glass stir in you?
I thought Boaty Glass was one of the many characters in the book who evolved slowly and well. In the beginning, I sort of felt sorry for him even though he was rich -- mainly because he couldn't buy love even with all that wealth. Plus he seemed so desperately alone. But the way he treated Sylvan in the end just totally made me despise him. What a vile human being! If he couldn't have Sylvan, then nobody else could have her. You begin to realize there was a reason for his loneliness.

I didn't really care for him from the start, and after what he did to Sylvan once he found out the truth, I really did not like him at all! I did not feel sorry for him. He thought that his money could take care of anything, yet in the end it couldn't keep his wife from continuing to lie about Charlie.

Hmm, that's true. I certainly felt all along that the obnoxiousness was bound to show up sooner or later :) but in the beginning I could at least feel some sort of empathy for a guy who was so alone. In the end of course I felt as if he brought on all that misery!

Disgust. Boaty Glass thought the world was his on a string and that money bought anything he wanted, even a wife. A wife who "obeyed" him because of his contract with her father when he "bought" her; just another of those objects which money acquired for Boaty. Usually the villain of a book has at least one redeeming feature, but I failed to find any for Boaty.

Dislike and a modicum of pity. Overall - I saw him as a bully who ultimately got what he deserved. He obviously was emotionally abused growing up and perpetuated his abuse. He was a person who had no friends and used his money to get attention.
