Would you like to live in Brownsburg?

Do you agree with this quote about Brownsburg? Would you like to live there? Why?

"When you're young, and you head out to wonderful, everything is fresh and bright as a brand new penny, but before you get to wonderful you’re going to have to go through all right. And when you get to all right, stop and take a good long look, because that may be as far as you’re going to go. Brownsburg ain't heaven, by any means. But it's perfectly fine. It's all right."

RE: Would you like to live in Brownsburg?

My daughter and I have been doing college tours and she keeps telling me she wants to live in a big city. When I asked her why, she said it was because a big city afforded her some sort of anonymity, people weren't constantly "in your business," yet there was this sense of collectively moving forward with life. I kind of see her point. For the most part I too would like to live in big cities. But there are definitely days when I would love to be part of a small town like Brownsburg. I live in a small town now (although definitely not as small as Brownsburg!) and there is something to be said for the "I've got your back" feeling you get from being part of a small town community.

I think Brownsburg would be a bit too small for my liking, especially back during that time frame. If you are not originally from that town, you would probably be considered an outsider for as long as you lived there, no matter how well liked you might have been. I loved the quote and did agree with it in relation to the story.

I grew up in a Brownsburg type of town and while it had advantages, it also had disadvantages that outweighed the positives. I hope I never have to go back to that sort of small town living.

I was born in a small town and later moved to another small town. There at some good things to this type of lifestyle, but there is also a number of negative aspects. For me, a mid sized town is better.

I presently live in a mid sized town. In Brownsburg everyone seemed to know everyone else which would make it harder for anyone passing through and staying there to "fit" in. That was evidenced by the length of time it took Charlie to feel like he is part of the community.

Yes, I would love to have lived in Brownsburg in 1948 to meet the characters in Goolrick's novel. There are so many small town characteristics that I find compelling. The relationships among the residents would have been interesting. I often think of the small town Southern women in STEEL MAGNOLIAS and the wonderful friendships that were forged among those women. Do such relationships still exist or have we become too much of a mobile society?

No way! I can't imagine living in a town where everyone knew everyone's business from birth on. I think it could be wonderful to develop those kind of friendships but what if you are one who doesn't fit it? But I also wouldn't want to live in a big city either. I think I would feel insignificant. Living in a mid size town works for me.

Absolutely not! I agree with many of the comments above - everybody knows your business, lack of opportunities, lack of acceptance of those who are "different". Having lived in both large and small cities, I found that within the large cities people still form small communities which afford a person familiarity, but anonymity remains an option when necessary.

Apparently Robert Goolrick still lives in a small Virginia town. I wonder how similar it is to Brownsburg!

No, I have lived in small towns before and much prefer a mid sized city fo a lot of reasons.

It might be interesting to know people like those in the book but I think I would like more privacy.
