Ann Beattie Biography
Charlotte Ann Beattie was born in Washington, D.C. on September 8, 1947 and grew up in the suburbs of Washington. She received her BA in 1969 from American University, and her MA from the University of Connecticut in 1970.
She gained attention in the early 1970s with short stories published in The Western Humanities Review, Ninth Letter, the Atlantic Monthly, and The New Yorker. She has received an award for excellence from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and a PEN/Bernard Malamud Award for excellence in the short story form. Her work has been compared to Alice Adams, J.D. Salinger, John Cheever, and John Updike.
Beattie and her husband, Lincoln Perry, live in Maine and Key West, Florida.
