Mark Salter Biography
Mark Salter was born in Davenport, Iowa, in 1955, the son of a decorated World War II and Korean War veteran. He spent four years repairing railroad tracks before attending college and eventually landing a job with U.N. Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick. He was hired by John McCain as a legislative aide in 1988. He became the senator's first speechwriter and later his chief of staff.
Salter has also written, in collaboration with McCain, the books Why Courage Matters, Faith Of My Fathers, Worth the Fighting For, Character is Destiny, and Hard Call: Great Decisions and the Extraordinary People Who Made Them.
Salter lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife Diane, and their two daughters.
